متن کاملNonlinear terahertz metamaterials via field-enhanced carrier dynamics in GaAs.
We demonstrate nonlinear metamaterial split ring resonators (SRRs) on GaAs at terahertz frequencies. For SRRs on doped GaAs films, incident terahertz radiation with peak fields of ~20-160 kV/cm drives intervalley scattering. This reduces the carrier mobility and enhances the SRR LC response due to a conductivity decrease in the doped thin film. Above ~160 kV/cm, electric field enhancement withi...

iii To my grandparents and family, Whose endless love and support made this work possible. iv ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank my advisor Wenshan Cai. His advocacy and his relentless desire to help me achieve my goals is more than I imagined in an advisor and I'm undeniably thankful. I'm indebted to the dedication of my labmates, Shoufeng Lan, Yonghao Cui and Lei Kang. I cannot speak enou...
متن کاملPredicting nonlinear properties of metamaterials from the linear response.
The discovery of optical second harmonic generation in 1961 started modern nonlinear optics. Soon after, R. C. Miller found empirically that the nonlinear susceptibility could be predicted from the linear susceptibilities. This important relation, known as Miller's Rule, allows a rapid determination of nonlinear susceptibilities from linear properties. In recent years, metamaterials, artificial...
متن کاملNonlinear Left-Handed Metamaterials
Metamaterials are artificial structures that are designed to exhibit specific electromagnetic properties required for different applications but not commonly found in nature. The methodology of synthesizing materials composed of microand nano-structured components that mimic the electromagnetic response of individual atoms and molecules (meta-atoms and meta-molecules) has proven to be very prod...
